When I was little we lived in a bad area and every now and then some gang members would come and eat dinner with us. I always thought they were just my parents edgy friends. I found out years later that they just liked Mom’s cooking and would show up at dinner time when hungry to get some of it. The only memory I still have of those dinners is noticing how polite and respectful they were.

I have a close family friend and I was really close with their mom who was a retired HS teacher. The town they grew up in had a lot of issues and went really downhill in the 90s/00s. She taught a lot of minority and underprivileged kids and there was a lot of gang activity. But she resonated with the kids.
She told us one day she went to the store and there a bunch of kids hanging out outside. One was one of her students. He called her over and said to the other kids. “This is Mrs B. She’s like my mom. She’s white, but she’s my mom. Don’t mess with Mrs B!”
