The ads are chosen by “interest”. Basically keywords in the article are used to display “relevant” ads.
This gets really dark in articles about mass shootings, with gun ads. Or stabbings and a kitchen knife ad.
Something I’ve seen in an article about children in Palestine starving was an ad about baby formula.
