I am pretty certain he had nothing to do with 9/11. He would have probably been in high school at the time. Also, there has not been targeting of Christians in Syria. Systematic at least.
That doesn’t mean he is a good guy. And him behind targeting Drouz and Alawies is possible. As far as US had him on terror list, they also had Mandela on terror list. It means nothing beside opposing. US foreign territorial interests. But the above seems to be mainly propaganda.

When they Syrian civil war started, it often came down to which genocidal faction a person would be willing to fight for: Al-Qaeda allied groups, ISIS, or the Assad Regime – and the latter two often worked together. And if you tried to choose “none of the above”, you got drafted anyway or just killed. In that war, Al-Qaeda was almost moderate compared to ISIS.
This guy dropped the Al-Qaeda affiliation as the first chance he had. He’s no secularist, but his Al-Qaeda days are long behind him and by middle eastern standards he’s pretty moderate.
