There’s a big void above the rudder where they climbed in during the voyage. They slept there as well

Imagine if the ship was loaded and riding low in the water. That’s a big risk to take but freedom is probably worth it.

So was the container ship not carrying any cargo? If it was carrying cargo, would the rudder not be submerged?

Why didn’t they just get on the boat? Are they stupid?

The type of life they would lead to risk it like this to reach a country that is on its way to offering them more poverty…
What a world we are left with. A shame.

Noooooope. Nope. I don’t know if there’s an official term for “fear of being anywhere near the waterline next to a giant grinding machine” but I have it.

Flaggers for safely backing-up. Only good for one use as drowning is a side effect.

Escaping poverty is one hell of a motivator. People in “developed” countries will never understand that.

Good way to get killed. Even in an older ship with a dogleg steering gear and an open rudder trunk with platforms in the upper section, it’s a cramped wet space with a very large rudder stock constantly moving around and sea water being pushed up into the trunk as the ship pitches, particularly if it’s fully laden. 11 days in one would be deeply, deeply unpleasant and hazardous.

They went to Brazil, and it took 16 or 13 (I don’t remember)
They thought they were going to Spain, of the 4 (not 3) 2 stayed in Brazil and two returned
