Phra Sukhothai Traimit – the “Golden Buddha” – is a 3m (9.8 ft) tall, 5.5 ton statue of the Buddha located in Bangkok, Thailand. Covered in plaster for centuries, an accident in 1955 revealed the solid gold underneath. At current gold prices, its raw value is approx. $750 Million USD. [2560 × 1696]

Imagine the person who discovered that. From “oh shit I cracked the statue!” to “oh man Its FREAKING GOLD!”
I imagine it was done originally to hide the gold statue from thieves. But I could also see some priest using it to make a really drawn out point about the material value versus the spirit.
That’s an absolutely stunning piece of history.
