BAD DESIGN

    1. Well it’s true: if it needs a tutorial to be understood, then it’s not well designed. A really great game is self-explanatory and can simply be enjoyed from the first minute without having to learn anything.

    2. The first PvZ had a tutorial so good, you didn’t realize it was a tutorial.

And the help section in the main menu was a joke from the devs.

    3. Well im usually annoyed that 378291th fps shooter has an unskippable tutorial that forces you to learn about “this joystick is for moving”, “this button is for shooting”, “aiming is more accurate than hipfire” like i fucking know i played games before

    4. I skip tutorials because I enjoy the initial confusion, increased rate of failure and learning process through pain. In a world where everything is solved the day it releases, I enjoy to not know stuff in a game.
If I’m really at my wit’s end, many games make it possible to look up tutorials in the menu again.

    5. Actually yes.

If you don’t bake the tutorial into your game and make the tutorial fun… that’s bad design.

I feel like good game design teaches you mechanics without you realizing it.

Can’t always be done seamlessly, but when it’s done well you don’t even realize it’s trying to teach you.

If the game needs to pop up a 4 page documentation on what each button does chances are I’m just not interested in playing that game.

    7. I mean, playing around with the controls and looking through all the menus is way more interesting to me than the game taking 5 minutes to tell me how to move the camera and how to press A

    8. So many let’s players or (first) impressions videos do this shit, it’s so crazy to me like you made a conscious desicion to make a video about the game. Why even upload it when you spend an hour making no progress cause you missed the tutorial?!
