Nördlingen is a medieval town in Germany, that was built in an impact crater 15 million years old and 25 km in diameter—the Nördlinger Ries—of a meteorite which hit with an estimated speed of 70,000 km/h, and left the area riddled with an estimated 72,000 tons of micro-diamonds [1200×900]

I wonder how much of a headache creating a good drainage system for the town was before modern plumbing
I never realized how small 25 km diameter looks.
That’s an incredible photo, but not 25km in diameter! It’s about 300m at best.
This is a (purposefully?) misleading headline.
The circular form of the medieval old city centre has nothing to do with the impact crater. The crater is so huge you have trouble recognising it when you stand on ground level.

So many pieces of fantasy media have used this location for inspiration, it’s a really iconic look.
Medieval town or giant crater? Talk about location, location, location!
I think this the city that Willy Wonka’s Wonkavator flew over at the end of the movie ‘Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory’.
It was pretty cool of the town planners to arrange for a meteor impact so they could build the town like this.
How many dinosaurs did it kill?
