A rare golden coin portraying King Darius the Great (522–486 BC) has been discovered in the Iranian province of North Khorasan. It was found inside a car after accident, when the injured driver refused hospital care, arousing the police’s suspicion and prompting a search of the vehicle. [1080×1053]

Two cars were involved in an accident in North Khorasan, Iran. Both drivers were injured, but one of them refused to be taken to the hospital, which aroused the police’s suspicion. As a result, the police searched his vehicle and discovered two golden coins that were later confirmed to be Achaemenid, and portraying King Darius the Great. (522–486 BC). They were examined by experts at the Cultural Heritage Department of North Khorasan.

The coins were immediately confiscated by the Iranian police. They have been transferred to the ICHTO (Iranian Cultural Heritage Organization) for further analysis, documentation, and protection. The officials have launched an investigation into how the coins came into the possession of the driver and whether they were part of illegal excavations in the country or antiquities trafficking.

Both coins are identical. Darius the Great is seen wearing his royal crown, a quiver on his back, a bow in his left hand, and a spear in his right. Achaemenid coins depicting kings are rare today.
