      The patriotism and freedom talk was just to cover that up.

      Proving what was learned in Trump first term – the NRA is entirely a way to funnel Russian dollars to right wing politicians. They even sent a spy/hooker over to handle it! When we kicked her out of the US Russia gave her a medal. everyone seems to have memory holed the whole thing.
