Lid or bottom of a container made of wood. The name Peter is written with runes: “pitiar”. Peter could be St Peter. If so, the inscription is likely to have had a protective function, where St Peter were to protect the contents of the container/vessel. Alternatively, Peter could be the name of the owner of the object. Such owner’s inscriptions are very common, and are found in Bergen, Trondheim and Oslo. It is worth noting the spelling “pitiar”, which hints to the name being pronounced “Petær”. Thus we have an early instance of the Oslo dialect in writing. Diameter: 13,5 cm. Thickness: 0,8 cm. The inscription is 2,2 cm long. Dated to the 11th or 12th century. Found at the Follo Line project, Oslo Old town.
