Historians have frequently mentioned Lotf Ali Khan Zand’s striking physical appearance. He is described as exceptionally handsome, tall, and athletic, with notable skill in horsemanship and swordsmanship. According to the Scottish historian John Malcolm, Lotf Ali Khan’s “beauty and manly grace” were renowned throughout the Empire, and even his adversaries admired his appearance and bearing.

He became a subject of romantic tales and poetry for his looks, chivalry, and personal bravery. Persian folklore often portrays him as the embodiment of youthful beauty and martial valor. His beauty and gallantry were celebrated in his lifetime, long after his death, and still are today. His personal charisma and striking presence helped him inspire fierce loyalty among his followers, who often compared him to the idealized warriors of Persian epic tradition.

Lotf Ali Khan was captured by Agha Mohammad Khan Qajar in 1794 after being betrayed. He was sent to Tehran in chains. brutally tortured, and executed shortly after. Agha Mohammad Khan personally ordered his blinding — a common method used to permanently remove someone from political or military contention in Iranian history.

His portrait is housed at the Sa’dabad Complex in Tehran, and his tomb is at the Grand Bazaar of Tehran. There are some anecdotal reports suggesting that his body was later moved to Mashhad and buried at the Imam Reza Shrine out of reverence. However, this has never been confirmed by historical records, and many scholars see it as symbolic or based on later romanticized stories, not fact.
