The portrait on the left was owned by the Carnegie Museum who were ready to discard it as a fake. Closer examination revealed that someone in the 19th cent. did a bad “touch up” work on it to make it prettier and easier to sell. They were able to completely restore the original painting [2957×1942]

      I’m glad the original painting was able to be salvaged. The “fixed” version doesn’t have the same charm and character.

      The victorian’s did that a lot. I’m assuming the one on the right is the restored version?

      It’s crazy how they slimmed down her hands too. Guess those meat hooks weren’t pretty enough for the Victorians.

      In what world is that touch up bad! technically speaking?

      Seems to me the restoration artist had some chops. Definitely improved the facial beauty.
