Unfun fact. Dura-Europos, an amazing ancient city with unique wall frescoes and stunningly preserved artifacts was basically strip mined for artifacts by ISIS. They used heavy machinery like backhoes and bulldozers to dig through ancient buildings looking for valuable items to sell on the black market. They could then use that money to finance their war. Aerial photos show a barren moonscape of crater holes from all the looting. Who knows how much beauty and knowledge was lost forever.
