* Inscription content: الشيخ شمس الدين بن سعيد رئيس المؤذّنين للجامع الأموي ممّا عمل برسم […] ” نقش محمّد بن الغذولي”
* Inscription translation: Constructed for the use of the Sheik Shams ed-Din Ben Sa’id, the chief of the Muazzins in the Jami al-Umawi in the year 735 by Ali ben ash-Shihab. Engraved by Mohammad ben al-Ghazuli.
The astrolabe had been in use since approximately 120bce. It would begin to be replaced by the Octent in 1600s then the sextant I believe.
It’s nice that I can feel stupid across so many centuries.
