People always assume it’s because homo sapien is just so spiritual. But I kinda wonder if it’s more that they understood corpses are a threat to water quality, spread disease, etc. It only takes one watering hole fouled by the carcass of a wild animal to learn that dead bodies are gross threats. And at that point, when you now have to treat your dead loved one as a gross threat, you probably add in some ritual so you don’t feel like you’re just treating your loved one like dangerous trash.
