Curious, any idea if this was just decorative or something that would be used?

The condition of this piece is almost incomprehensible. The colours of the stumpwork are unfaded. The material is undamaged. Has it been kept in the dark in a total vacuum for 380 years whilst being guarded by a secret society who’s responsibility for it’s safekeeping has been carefully passed down from family to family for generations? They are known to each other by a stylised basket shaped tattoo and whispered about by alternative historians who collectively name them…The Basket Cases.
