Ancient Roman slave-collar found in Rome with a bronze disc announcing the reward for returning the runaway slave to his or her master, Zoninus, 4th-6th century AD, National Museum of Rome, Baths of Diocletian, Rome[1284×1744]
Interestingly (or disturbingly), when a slave in Rome ran away, the crime they’re committing is technically stealing, for they are stealing themselves from their masters.
Slavery was, and remains, quite the brutal and inhumane practice, huh?
