Found an article with more examples and context in my attempt to find the actual books containing these illustrations. To be fair, I’m not sure how we ended up here. Oh right, I was on my second try of finding an artifact showing Matshishkapeu, the Fart God (failed). This led to trying to find the precise cuneiform tablet with the oldest known fart joke in the world from 1900 BC ancient Sumer “Something which has never occurred since time immemorial; a young woman did not fart in her husband’s lap” (failed) and now here we are with medieval farting marginalia. At least this kind soul tracked down the actual books. This is not how I planned on spending today’s artifact research but lemme tell ya, Google’s algorithm sure takes us on a ride sometimes

    2. And I thought the Terry Gilliam animations from Monty Python and the Holy Grail were his idea!
