Very cool, and looks very modern for something from the 17th century. The design is way ahead of its time.
I wonder if this was intended to be a pot for a Japanese wind orchid, Vanda falcata, known in Japan as “furan”? Cultivation of them was very popular among the upper classes in the 17th century in Japan, and they were traditionally grown in a mound of moss in a shallow bowl, sometimes with pierced sides to allow air to flow through the moss, which is critical to the health of the plant.
