**The artifact was discovered in Pompeii, in the so-called Mosaic House with Doves. The object is in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples.**
That is not a chessboard. Chess made it to Europe in the Middle Ages.
How is that a chessboard, when a chessboard is a square of 8 rows and columns in alternating colors, and there’s either seven squares in a row, but then it’s 9 rows of squares, or 9 squares, but then only 6 rows?
Or, in other words: is this a chess game board or just a checkered circle?
