The Vore Buffalo Jump, in Wyoming, is a sinkhole that was used between 1500-1800 CE by Native American hunters, and which was deep enough to cause the crippling or death of bison which were stampeded into it. The site is estimated to contain the remains of 20,000 buffalo [2128×1582]

I’m always disgusted by these sites.
Was driving them into a sinkhole an efficient method, or very wasteful? How many people would you need standing by for the work and what was the method of preservation, or distribution? Did most buffalo rot down there, while just the top layer were used, or did the hunters arrange to have every carcass exposed for harvesting?
