      [Singer Sewing Machine Sign

On loan from Roberta Brandes Gratz

Translation: Sewing Machine (at top); Singer (at bottom)

By the time this sign was produced, probably in the 1930s, residents of the Lower East Side had been working in the garment industry for generations. For many, owning a sewing machine meant an opportunity to earn a better living. The large red shape framing the sign is the Hebrew letter “samech,” which makes the “S” sound for “Singer.”]
