The first celebration of Cinco de Mayo was held in California in 1862, not long after the news of Mexico’s victory at the Battle of Puebla initially spread. While the holiday is, understandably, recognized more so by the people in the Mexican state of Pueblo, it should not be overlooked that the holiday initially started as a form of solidarity by a population that still shared a common heritage and history with Mexico. To this day, Cinco de Mayo is used by many Americans of Mexican descent (Chicanos) as a way to celebrate their heritage and history.

Truth! Don’t let the media erase history. They’ve been on one for a decade now
