Does Denmark even have anti-Blasphemy laws? That’s an important distinction.

That guy who made the drawings was a bit of a shitty person , but he didnt deserve to die like he did regardless. ( If this post is about the dude i think it is?)

Not just in Denmark. Whole countries in the Islamic world decided to boycott Denmark over this. It was more or less presented as the nation of Denmark itself drew the cartoons.

Nothing about history, but the song that was playing during that scene is one of my favourite all time songs. They made a banger there.

This happened 20 years ago by the way, while Denmark was helping the US kill civilians in Iraq because a completely unrelated group of Muslims from other countries committed a terrorist attack.

… it’s a small minority of Muslims who react to stuff like this. Most of them, like everyone else, just go on with their lives
It’s kinda how both Islamists and rightwingers react when they see a Pride flag

Yeah, don’t force others to bend to the will of religions they don’t practice. But this meme can be used for any “Religious fundamentalists whenever someone doesn’t conform to their views”

I think my issue here is that the louder minority of Muslims got offended but this partly contributed to anti-inmigrant laws which unfortunately was a really good excuse for the far-right to exploit European democracy.

Is there a history memes sub that has actual historians in it? That feels more fun than r/chudsub450

The whole affair started because a Danish publisher couldn’t find an illustrator for a book about Mohammed.
This lead to the news paper Jylland Posten asking if the fear of retribution was driving illustrators to avoid Islam as a topic. They got 12 illustrators to draw pictures of Mohammed.
Before this happened, I don’t think anyone was aware of the ire this would provoke. How could you want to kill someone over a cartoon? Most people would have thought this was a racist stereotype but turns out a lot of people were willing to kill over a cartoon.
It really changed the trajectory of Danish politics.

Even the Ayatollah Khomeini had a favorite painting of the Prophet Mohammad.. surely others can be more lenient towards figural art as well.

Don’t forget Charlie Hebdo in Paris too. This isn’t me having a go at Muslims, but rather the religious fundamentalist countries that make it easier to hold such extremist views.
