What do today’s young Irish people think of the IRA?

In America, the Mountbatten killing was a big deal. The bombing was just another bombing. There were many.
They ran the troubles as part of the evening news every night (kind of like the Vietnam war reports). If there weren’t shootings or bombings, they would just interview someone.

Before the election the Tories future candidate Airey Neaves was also assassinated in March by a mercury tilt bomb under his car by the INLA, a Marxist republican group, inside the Westminster parkings somehow.
While the Mountbatten assassination is well known enough, on the same day the IRA conducted a spectacular, killing 18 British soldiers at Narrow Water, the highest toll for a single battle in both the Troubles and the Anglo-Irish war. As a 3 vehicles convoy was passing a 500lbs roadside bomb exploded killing instantly 7 soldiers.
The remaining soldiers called reinforcements and set up a defensive position in a nearby gatehouse, which was predicted by the IRA who had put there another bomb, bigger and incendiary, to catch both the soldiers and the reinforcements, killing 11. In total 18 dead, 28 seriously injured, 1 helicopter damaged, 1 lorry destroyed. One civilian was killed and one wounded when the Paras started firing wildly across the border.
Thatcher on the 30th visited all main postings in Northern Ireland in a day visit, including Crossmaglen whose IRA units planned and executed both operations. The local IRA still remained constantly invincible, never suffering any drawback.
Thatcher’s successor, John Major had a similar welcome when the same Crossmaglen brigade mortared Downing Street in February 1991 nearly killing the whole cabinet. Thatcher’s had been the target but she quitted the job, which went ahead anyway.
