The Helios plane crash when the pilot forgot to pressurise the cabin as it was set to manual mode rather than auto mode after a maintenance checkup which the pilot failed to notice. The reason why the pilot did not respond to the cabin pressure warning becuz it sounded similar to the takeoff configuration warning. But later a flight attendant who used a medical oxygen tank was conscious and tried to steer the aircraft to safety but by that point it ran out of fuel and crashed.
Oh I think there was an air crash investigation episode on this before. I can’t remember fully.

Shit is just really sad
~~This is probably why autopilot is invented~~

“They requested a full inspection of the door. The inspection was carried out by a ground engineer, who then performed a [pressurization](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cabin_pressurization) leak check. To carry out this check without requiring the aircraft’s engines, **the pressurization system was set to “manual”, but the engineer failed to reset it to “auto”** upon completion of the test.
After the aircraft was returned into service, **the new flight crew overlooked the pressurization system state on three occasions**: during the preflight procedure, the after-start check, and the after-takeoff check. During these checks, no one on the [flight deck](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cockpit) noticed the incorrect setting.”

On the 14th of August 2005, Helios Airways Flight 522 was flying from Larnaca, Cyprus to Prague, Czechia. When the aircraft climbed to 3670 metres the warning horn went off but the pilots dismissed it as a takeoff configuration warning, the pilots radioed the operations centre. When one of the engineers asked a question the pilot ignored the question likely due to the early stages of hypoxia. This was the last message from the plane.
At 5500 metres the oxygen masks were dropped and levelled at 10000 metres. ATC tried contacting the aircraft but were unsuccessful. After levelling it entered a holding pattern over Athens for 70 mins. The Greek military dispatched a pair of F-16s fearing a hijacking. The pilots reported seeing a person slumped over in the pilots seat and a man in the plane rushing back and forwards. A few mins later the plane lost power and crashed just east of Athens.

This type of accident is one of those “Rules are written in blood” moments. We learned a lot from this, and made a lot of changes to flying as a result.

Meh, why didn’t the fligth attendant play microsoft flight simulator in their free time?
If I were a flight attendant I would do it and learn how to control the airplane in emergency. Or at least to contact the ATC for instructions how to set autopilot for landing.
