Inflating out of water is incredibly dangerous for puffer fish. Often fatal.
They are supposed to inflate with water, not air.

Basically when this fish becomes scared it starts to hyperventilate so bad it turns itself into a fish balloon. Then evolution was like: “well if you’re going to over-hyperventilate, might as well make it look intimidating”
