There was a meme posted a little while back that caused a lot of great discussions about Singapore gaining independence. The general consensus amongst those educated in the situation was that the ruling parties of both nations wanted Singapore’s independence, as both knew that they’d never be able to work together successfully (both had gone against their word multiple times and had conflicting interests).

The issue was that the Singaporean people didn’t believe their city would survive if they were independent, so they would have probably revolted if their ruler made them leave Malaysia, with their new ruler thus rejoining Malaysia under worse terms than before. Thus, both sides came to an agreement that they would “kick out” Singapore. They also had to have these talks in secret as if the British found out, they’d step in and force them to stay.

I’ll see if I can find the link to the other post later, it had some really interesting discussions about the nuance of the situation.

    5. Malaysia: Good news, you are now independent!

Singapore: But we don’t want that.

Malaysia: We didn’t say it was good news for YOU.
