The Southern Cross is a major symbol for many countries located in the Southern Hemisphere.

Ah yes, the Southern Cross. The constellation so iconic that three different countries put it on their flag and then spent decades arguing about who did it better.
Fun (well known) astronomical fact, the reason both the North Star and the Southern Cross indicate accurately the north and the south respectively, is because they both are alligned with the rotation axis of the earth.
So if you take a chronophotography of the night sky, every star seems like they draw a circle around the North Star and the Southern Cross.

I was back in Australia earlier this year, and walking in the evening though “hmm, where is it?”. Looked up and it was right there, right where I looked.
I am not an antipodean, but It is a pretty special symbol.
