1970s My mom and dad after they came to the US from Trinidad

My own mom came here from overseas as well. She didn’t know much English. I can’t imagine how frightening it’d be to move to another country. It speaks to the bravery of your parents to step into a new culture and new life here. Mom worked hard to make her home here, it took her a long time to get herself set up and comfortable.

Did your parents know how poor American race relations were? I think it’d be even tougher for them to come from the majority and step into the minority. Maybe they found it very welcoming here! I’m pretending they did, it’s why they are smiling.

Despite all that, our parents must have seen America as an opportunity. I hope your parents never regretted making the move. Mom never has, even when things got tough.
