In sunshine: Blacktop is hot, blacktop painted white is not as hot. The temperature gradient causes cracks to form and grow.

This is actually super cool because it’s exactly what people are trying to do in cities with “cool pavements” to fight the heat island effect. Your pic is like a tiny demo of why engineers obsess over thermal expansion and materials instead of just saying “eh, paint it lighter.”

Maybe they were premade casts that were paved into the road instead of painted?

Why don’t we paint the entire road to prevent cracking altogether?

      It’s not paint.
Modern street markings are done with melted on plastic.
