Ranked as one of the deadliest conflicts in human history, the rebellion devastated 17 provinces, shattered the economic and military viability of the Qing dynasty, and planted deep seeds of anti-imperialist, revolutionary sentiment in China.

Hong Xiuquan: After repeatedly failing his Confucian civil service examinations, he experienced intense, feverish visions. He interpreted these through Protestant pamphlets he had received, leading him to believe he was the younger brother of Jesus Christ.

He joined a religious group in Guangxi province and built a massive following among the impoverished and marginalized. The movement aimed to overthrow the Manchu-led Qing dynasty and establish a theocracy governed by the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom.

The Qing government, initially caught off guard, reorganized its military and recruited regional armies. It eventually received military and logistical support from Britain and France who feared for their trade in China.

Imperial forces besieged and recaptured Nanjing in 1864, during which Hong Xiuquan died, bringing an end to the primary conflict.
