I have to admit, I was more shocked at the price. Chips run about 4.50 and up where I am

Salted caramel potato chips? Are they good? I’m having a hard time imagining the flavor.

For a long time windows (like double/triple pane for your house gas fill between panes) couldn’t be shipped over the Rocky Mountains. They have mostly solved that problem but manufacturers west of the Rockies often only sell that product west of the Rockies because it is easier and the market (CA, OR, WA, NV, NM) is large enough to support a separate factory.

They do have solutions now to ship across the altitudes but sometimes it’s not worth it.

    4. The chips are $3.99. $2.99 if you create a store account and get the membership discount. $1.99 if you create a store account and ALSO download the app, log into the app while you’re shopping, search for lays chips, scroll down to the caramel flavor, click clip digital coupon, and then redeem the coupon at checkout.

Or, Kroger could just put them on sale for $1.99!!!

      Sorry, irrationally upset.

Was there an episode of How to with John Wilson where he tried to get a bag of chips as high as possible?

It’s fun when you go even high in elevation and then it DOES pop while you’re driving and sounds SIMILAR to blowing a tire but you’re car still is driving fine after a moments panic and then you REMEMBER you had chips in the car 😂

I bought so.e coffee when I was in Idaho recently. When I drove through Wyoming at high elevation my car suddenly smelt strongly of coffee. The little breather on the coffee bag vented at elevation . pleasant surprise.

    8. I learned about this the hard way when I was 10 and driving back home from Disneyland. All of our foil balloons popped.

Opening spices and condiments are a gamble here too. Took me way too long to learn to always OPEN AWAY FROM EYE

I think I know where this is. Hope you have a great time visiting family!

    11. If you take a breath underwater from a scuba tank and swim up to the surface without breathing out the same thing will happen to your lungs. Gasses expand when pressure decreases.

    12. Fun Fact: I work at the plant that makes these chips and we intentionally do not add as much air when shipping to a high elevation area. Check the bag time stamp for a “M” or “MT” to see if it was made for high elevation. Might be a shipping error. Enjoy the salty pillow!

    13. Fun fact: any code date with an M notation in it is designed for mountain airfill.

    14. Most companies that ship potato chips to where I live don’t come through the Eisenhower tunnel. At over 11,000 feet, there’s a risk of the chips popping. Source: talked to a truck driver who has to come down I-80 and South.

    15. I used to gain 4500 ft in elevation going to work, opening yogurt to eat on the way up the mountain was always a roll of the dice. And my empty plastic water bottles looked like they’ve been through battle when I got home.

    16. Was in Flagstaff, AZ yesterday and noticed the same thing. Then brought them to the Grand Canyon which is even higher and they did not pop

I stopped at the grocery store in Leadville, CO during a road trip. Elevation about 10,000 ft.

Some of the potato chip bags on the shelf had popped. The rest looked like the picture.

The other thing I learned while road tripping across the west– elevation changes will make the empty water bottles in your back seat randomly make popping sounds. Scared the crap out of me every time.

    18. Where was this taken?

I need to try those with cheddar sour cream chips mixed in for science.

Those potato chip bags are designed to be opened in flight. You open ‘em at sea level, somebody could be killed!

Love how they will make ANY flavor but baked sour cream and onion. Miss them chips

I’m in Colorado Springs….I love opening soda cans that were packaged at sea level.

    22. yipee-kiyay on

Just watched a Youtube video on this. It was with that vsauce guy and Hannah Fry talking about this phenomenon. This shows that these chips were packaged closer to sea level. they also mentioned how a hypothetical wormhole between sea level and Denver would be catastrophic because of the winds it would create going from high pressure sea level to a low pressure area like Denver.

I live at 7000 ft. I don’t buy boxes of variety chips anymore because 1/3 of the bags inside are popped 🫠

    24. I forget, living in Utah, that the bags aren’t usually inflated to near popping at sea level. It’s been 13 years since I lived below 4k ft.

    25. I want to know where you found them at that price. Last I saw a bag that size was 6 bucks and change.

    26. ludicrous_copulator on

I spent summers in Colorado at 8500 ft. All the bags looked like this. And I spent the first month’s sucking on oxygen cans.
