There’s a single parking space right next to the cathedral, signed: überborgermeister.

The feeling of awe stepping out of Cologne Hauptbanhof and seeing the cathedral looming over you is unforgettable, I would love to visit Germany again sometime

That entire part of the city was bombed to the ground towards the end of WWII. Cathedral was pretty much the only building sparred. Interestingly, the part of the city on the other side of the river still has its old architecture.

I ve been there several times, the cathedral is next door to the railway station. But the best thing in Cologne is not the cathedral ,but Neptunbad, saunas and swimming pools, 100%FKK.

I visited in 2022. I was in Germany for a few days last week to visit Aachen, the seat of the Holy Roman Empire under Charlemagne. It’s not nearly as large as Köln, but it’s still worth visiting. Köln is still my favorite cathedral.

Fun fact, the place/plateau that the Kölner Dom is situated on was decreed to be forever be conserved as free space, with no buildings on it.
But as time went by, of course the city placed more and more buildings in its vicinity and directly besides it. On the right the square building is a museum for example.

Wow. It’s almost as though everything else is less than 81 years old for some reason.

It’s shocking coming out of the train station right beside it and seeing it towering over you. A very abrupt experience but also really cool. Koln is a lovely city as well, one of my favorites in Germany

The box on the right is the Römisch-Germanisches-Museum. I can’t imagine the hubris of the Architects of this building.
Could use a nice pressure wash…
Needs a bath.
Coolest building on earth.
Would be so neat to see it clean again though.
They should have preserved some space around the landmark instead of butting modern buildings right up to it like this.

Clever of them to build it next to the train station for the pilgrims

Oh Cologne has an evil organisation’s not-so-secret lair like Clermont-Ferrand. Neat.
