That might be the avobenzone in the sunscreen reacting with iron and rusting.
I have a well and my water had a lot of iron in it. It turns any pale shirt I wear with sunscreen orange.

Could have been a single displacement reaction between the zinc containing compound in the sunscreen and the metal in your bag strap. Can any chemists confirm?
I can’t wear coppertone sunscreen because it reacts with my body chemistry and turns my shirt collar rust orange
