In 1453, while besieging Constantinople, Mehmed II looked at the giant chain blocking the Golden Horn and basically said “fine, we’ll just bring the navy over the hill.” The Ottomans greased wooden logs, dragged around 70 ships across land overnight, and launched them into the harbor behind the Byzantine defenses. Imagine waking up as a Byzantine defender and seeing enemy warships where water wasn’t even supposed to exist yesterday. Medieval warfare was absolutely unhinged.
