Man caught with 2,000 live ants in his luggage after trying to smuggle them out of Kenya. They were rare queen ants intended for sale to exotic pet and insect collectors.

Its quite unbelievable how weird humans can be at times. Literally paying thousands of dollars & risking being caught just for ants.
Tbh, i too keep exotic inverts & other animals which have been moderately expensive so i may be somewhat biased lol.
Most importantly, i really feel bad for those ants. Must have been very stressing.

How rare are they? They were likely caught during the swarming season with thousands being everywhere.
Government gave prison sentence because he had no permit, not because the specie is endangered.
I have a problem with exotic trade of animals that are endangered or greatly affected by it. We lack the basic information about how common or rare these ants are.
We also lack basic information on how easy or difficult it is to get the permit, and whether the individual tried.

2000 queens! There’s gotta be a lot of work going into collecting that many queens and getting them into a pod 1 by 1.

a friend got paid to remove a snake but first bred it and sold it’s children for thousands of dollars.

Leaf cutter ants maybe? I’m no ant expert.
Edit: should have watched the whole video first. Apparently these are just garden variety ants.
