Sited on an escarpment of Salisbury Plain, adjacent to an Iron Age hill fort, this is the oldest of several such chalk horses in the county.Restored in 1778, it possibly replaced an earlier rendering which, so the legend goes, commemorated King Alfred's victory at the Battle of Ethandun in 878. Here, the horse is already under the care of that inestimable British institution, The National Trust, who have recently given it a spring clean. So it stands out nicely.
