I thought it was more of a recollection of actual dialogues involving Socrates, of course modified somewhat by Plato. Though I’m not sure at what point such a recollection becomes fiction and if Plato has crossed that point.

I personally believe the stories of Socrates are true but it’s just that Plato admired his mentor so he embellished and modified things a bit

Reading Plato’s dialogues makes me question this whole “The Greeks were so smart” idea. To me it seems that Socrates was basically Charlie Kirk debating moronic college students.
