Worked as a pharmacy tech at Target about 15 years ago. During orientation they made us watch a video on the dangers of unions. Lots of anti union posters in the break room.
Meanwhile I made $10/hr and the unionized Costco down the street paid $15/hr.

I’ve worked union and non-union jobs, I’ve always liked the non-union jobs better. In the places I’ve worked, I thought the unions were needless politics in the workplace and did nothing but collect union dues and protect workers that really shouldn’t have a job. As for the idea that without unions, companies will take advantage of and abuse their workers – I’ve never experienced that because any such workplace lost workers and gained a reputation of being a crap company.

The sad part is people believe this and defend it. Let me tell you if Unions were good for companies and bad for employees every company would be union. Electricians in my Local earn $77/hr. $45/hr on the check you take home and the rest into pension, healthcare and misc. So I make $45/hr take home, $16/hr for my pensions, yes plural, and have free health, dental and vision. (only 5 paid holidays and no PTO but nothing is perfect). In comparision the BIG area non-union company the same electrician is paid $28/hr (IF they have 5+years experience) with two weeks PTO and 6 paid holidays, I think it was 3% match on 401k. That is it. Please, I know some Unions have a horrible rep and some like the UAW have the worst image, but damn if you start looking into do you find the best way for workers to get rights and living wages is through unionization.

This shit is incomprehensible to me as a European. In my country the unions work closely with regulators to monitor companies. It is litterly impossible for a company to opt out of union representation. It is mandated by law that companies make time for union representatives to talk to workers and they can perform an inspection at any time. Once the union makes an agreement, it will apply to every company in the sector as long as more than half of them signed.

I work for a big multi billlion dollar company. Most of the workers are remote and get paid a fixed salary. No overtime. We work on a points system, every task we complete is worth a certain amount of points, and when we hit our our daily and weekly point goal, we can be done with work for the day/week. They sell it to us that in theory if we work hard we can work less hours. In reality, it’s pretty rigged, not many workers are putting in less than 60 hours a week and most are putting in 70-80 hours per week. Some of the slower workers are even working up to 90 hours per week (but somehow they stay employed).
Any way a few years back about 200 employees tried to unionize (their managers also tried to help the union organization ) and they all got immediately fired.
