In his autobiographical Confessio, St. Patrick wrote that upon trying to secure passage on a ship to escape slavery, the pagan sailors offered their breasts to be sucked. He refused, stating it was "out of reverence for God". In pre-Christian Ireland, offering a nipple to be sucked or kissed was an ancient Celtic custom, it served as a symbolic gesture of submission, asking for protection, or swearing loyalty to a superior or chieftain.

    1. At the beginning of this year i listed to a podcast about St Patrick while i was working. When i got to this part of the story i had to skip back to make sure i heard that right. I love when I’m learning history and someone does something that’s still relatable today, like Patrick saying “wtf? No I’m not doing that” and the sailors being like “yeah ok well you can still come tho”

Its always interesting ways that humans throughout history made act for showing submission.

Like in Greece they had supplication where the petitioner would kneel before the superior clasp their knees and grab their chin. This was often a way to ask for a favour or protection.

The supplicant(petitioner) was also believed to be protected by Zeus.
