I think the primary weapons were longbows, naginatas and spears. Very much later the guns. Katanas were all time secondary.

Also, before the gun was invented, Samurai used bows and polearms more than swords. The katana basically had the same purpose as the longsword European knights used. It was a sidearm when the the enemy is about to overrun your position.

Samurai in reality weren’t noble warriors, they were privileged assholes. They easily could rob kill and pillage, without fearing much consequences.

Thinking about Nagashino, I’m at the point of trying to figure out whether the samurai had cavalry charges like the usual image of cavalry charging up on the arquebusiers.
But the Japanese back then did not even have shock cavalry? Their horses were smaller then.

Samurai and bushido as we know it today is fairly modern concept that came about during Edo period when samurais turned into glorified bureaucrats. It was further developed into what we know today after Meiji restoration which is around when Samurai class was abolished and bushido became popular in service of rising Japanese nationalism and militarism.
From around 13th to 16th century when samurais were actually running around fighting wars, they had no problem using any and all tactics that could help them win including all kinds of betrayals and backstabbings. Guns were just another useful tools they could use to win.

I like to imagine that the chinese general Zhuge Liang (WoLong) wouldve also carried a matchlock pistol if they had been invented. Mans nickname was “sleeping dragon” guns make combat easier, and matchlock throw up a bunch of smoke just like dragons, thank you for coming to my ted talk.

Honor was only a thing between two samurai, fighting in a official duel.
But in war? Fuck it, guns traps, sneaky and unfair. Whatever gives you an advantage.

Same with Native Americans and many African tribes, they loved when guns were brought over and swiftly adopted the technology.
