In 1963, a man in Turkey knocked down a wall in his basement and accidentally discovered Derinkuyu—an 18-story ancient underground city designed to shelter 20,000 people during invasions.

I’d keep it a secret after finding it so me and the boys have somewhere to go and kiss.

That sounds like a terrible idea though?
I mean, invaders will notice 20K people disappeared.. And I’m fairly sure all the neighbours would be like “oh yeah, that’s the city with the massive underground tunnels!”
Wouldn’t it be better to build a wall?

It’s wild how places like this just become forgotten. Really makes you wonder how much of the present day will be remembered in 1,000 years. Assuming any civilization still exists.
It would be funny if he was knocking the wall down to build a fallout shelter.

To me it makes more sense that its a shelter in case of natural disasters

I’ve always thought that the only indication of our civilization ever existing in millions of years would be the oil deposits near the biggest cities created by graveyards, but given the popularity of cremation rising, even this wouldn’t exist after us. The only indication would be a massive dying, loss in biodiversity and, of course, pollution and layer of plastic in the soil

I wonder if the more expensive rooms were upstairs (not too far underground in case of an emergency inside but too close to the top of invaders come) or downstairs?
