My belief is that people who feel inferior, find ways to validate a version of reality where they are actually superior, but down trodden.
Same pattern manifests in many different ways. The confident alpha male, with severe insecurity and a fragile ego. The moral or virtuous person, who does questionable things in private. The social media family, who neglect their kids off camera.
It’s an attempt to project to the world the opposite of their internalized shame, and seek external validation that it isn’t true.
We all wear masks to hide parts of ourselves, some people to a greater degree.
