On September 13, 1923, a live demonstration was held at the Washington D.C. Police Headquarters to test a new lightweight bulletproof vest. The man on the left standing calmly is W.H. Murphy, the inventor of the protective vest, and the man firing the weapon is his business partner, Charles W. Smith.
