    1. Bit of context. My downstairs neighbor, kicked his gf out last summer, and ever since she has been living in the storage room on the side of the apt building. She turns tricks for drugs and food. And I recently heard from an argument with her current man (Also homeless), that she spends the majority of her tricking money on scratch offs and then she saves the ones she looses on and there is a recycling place in town that will take them for a penny each. But that’s hardly makes any of this seem worthy.

Caught her gathering them all up to take there today.

    2. This drives me nuts. I knew someone that had to stop every day and get their cigs and a scratchie. Do they not read the odds on the back? Go play roulette if you HAVE to, odds are astronomically higher.

    3. Scratchers are practically just a tax on the poor at this point…. shit is so sad

    4. My mother in law was a huge gambling addict. To the point that she sold her house so that she could spend more on scratchers. After she passed away, we cleaned the room that she was renting. We found trash bags completely full of used scratchers. It was mind blowing.

You can mail them in some states and get a couple bucks no?

      Even the losers

    6. Gotta keep all those losers so you can write off your hundreds thousand dollars in losses to not pay on the big 10k winner you will eventually get.

We have second chance like drawings here and you scan your cards to get points to play. I used to pull them from the trash at the machines all the time and frequently found winning tickets.

Guy at the recycling place might be trying to offset legitimate gambling wins, with losses for tax purposes.

Someone’s collecting that stack of losers to claim a tax exemption on the winning ticket.

I would always buy one 20 dollar one on Friday. Then money got tight so I stopped. Been about a year. Other day I had some extra cash and was feeling lucky. Spent 40 won 160. Needless to say ill wait about another year lol

That individual is most likely collecting losing tickets to use as tax write offs or to balance the winnings from a MASSIVE win. Even if they didn’t buy them the person can still use them as a write off

Men I buy one ticket every couple of months, what the heck that’s sad.

My dad was a hoarder. He saved every scratch off loser he had ever scratched. We had a pallet of them from his house when he died.

    14. I borrowed my ex-girlfriend’s mom’s car one day. I opened the glove compartment and there were at least triple this many there. It was really horrible because she didn’t make a lot of money.

Where did you find my mother in law, she’s been missing and this is proof she’s alive

    16. I went through a little Lotteria phase , id buy a 4 pack of natty light tall boys and 3 lotteries it was almost an even $10 back in 2011.

Anyway the way I got past that is after 6 months and accumulating a stack about half that size. I realized I had maybe won $40 after spending over $700. Then the price of beer doubled…sad times.

    17. Saw two older ladies sit down with a huge stack of scratch offs each on a flight to Vegas. The silver gunk was fucking everywhere when we landed.

    18. When I was a kid I loved scratch offs. One time I won $15- the most I’d ever won. Went in, bought two more with that money, bricked twice. Did the math and realized i would have had like, $200 if I’d abstained from the start, and would have $15 if I hadn’t been a total sucker and bought back in.

Never bought another. I remember the feeling of being cheated- it wasn’t worth the money. All the fun I’d had was retroactively tainted by the knowledge I never really had a chance to begin with, just some pretty packaging to make me think I did

Honestly if you don’t win after all that, maybe you should consider saving your money instead.

To me the whole lottery system is a way to have poorer people pay for the luxury of someone else to get rich and watch mostly everyone else lose. It’s no different than what Bezos does in a sense – where he takes our money to get rich and what we get is deeper in debt.

without OP’s context my guess would’ve been someone just won big on a scratcher and said let er ride

    22. I had a friend win $20,000 on a scratch off ticket. He had everyone he knew give him losers up to $20,000 of total value so he could write off his win.

    23. I like to buy a scratchie and keep it in my pocket for the day. Its kind of an uplifting feeling to know there’s even a slim chance im holding a big winner. Just that glimpse of hope is a weird comforting feeling.

Then I hit 100k and for the next year I was chasing that same high. It kind of ruined gambling for me for a while because even hitting a decent win felt disappointing. My wife pointed it out to me one day when I told her “I only hit 500”

Had a stack of losers like this on my fridge. Finally had to stop and now I am back to keeping a little money aside for my Friday scratch off that ill carry through my work day.

Did they buy them 3 at a time at the gas station while a line as long as the Amazon river builds up behind them?
