How do birds not choke for air? It is still obviously in the neck when the bird walks off, so I assume it is blocking the airway. But I’ve seen many videos of birds do something similar and they don’t choke.

In a furrow irrigated field you’ll see the herons just waiting for the water to reach a hole. When the gopher tries to not drown the heron just snaps them up.

I came up on a pair of blue herons on the green of a golf course one day battling to the death. It was grisly. The victor would step back from the other and watch it and if it moved or twitched it would run back over jump on it and proceed to keep spearing it with its beak. Until that moment, I’d just imagined them as peaceful fishermen. Not any more.

I saw a heron last weekend, they sometimes comes around a few ponds and rivers around where I am. They are crazy good hunters. I saw this dino bird snipe a fish, they were looking in completely the other direction and then all of a sudden like swung around and just speared it.
How long until it’s dead inside? Like is he kicking around in the belly for a bit before it dies? I’m guessing suffocation is first? Or the acid in the belly?
