HP Lovecraft was the JK Rowling of his time.
Extremely influential for a fictional genre. Political problems (even with respect to their respective times).

It gets annoying how you cannot discuss anything to do with Lovecraft without someone popping in and going “Hey, did you know he was super RACIST” as if someone doesn’t bring it up in every single discussion about Lovecraft.
But he really was super racist, and not just in a normal “it was a different era” sort of way. Other people who were already pretty racist by 1920s standards were like “You know, Howard, sometimes you’re just a little too racist.”

As someone who read almost everything Lovecraft made, the funny thing is that there are way more instances of him being hateful and racist against poor white people than against other races. And that’s something very common with fantasy and sci-fi short stories at the time, at least the ones I read, anytime they dealt with poor or rural white people it was usually to show them as just one step away from animals

For the record, on this specifically I don’t think Lovecraft was all that concerned with his slight Welshness (at least not as an adult. As a teen… well let’s just say he too had his edgy teenage years). It helped that some of his favorite authors were also Welsh

It’s a good thing the lore he created only has his name, if even that sometimes cause I’ve seen “Cthulhu Mythos” used here and there. The entities and locations taking on a life of their own beyond his creative control is cool and now just about anyone can add to it

If it were Irish ancestry, sure—the Irish not being human and all—but Welsh? Aren’t they good Protestant Britons?

So Innsmouth folk are Welsh? Guess I should’ve been more suspicious that one of the most famous Welsh people of our time is named Marina.

Probably worth stating that he apparently moderated his views over time. Not to say he stopped being racist.

H.P. Lovecraft is a Xenophobe in a literal, clinical sense of the word. That is, anything strange to him, scares him.

You have to be basically a blood relation of HP In order to not be from a race/ethnic background he didn’t write something nasty about.

Dude, it is crazier than that. The story had the ending that the protagonist found himself to be one of the monster folks, the Innsmouth folks,a hybrid child himself. But it was a great book and my journey to become a lovecraft fan.
