The way these answers were written it seems more like an off-color, poor taste at a joke.

I assume their responses were tongue in cheek.  People joked about things like this back in the day.

A lot of this stuff was fake, like the articles about how women love being spanked.

    4. Kind of trite… but what is wrong with so many men? Even today. And I say this as a dude.

The thing is, I wouldn’t be surprised if every other dude was abusive towards his partner. Look to your left, look to your right…

    5. “When you kick her, it’s an accident, and the black and blue spot can’t be seen!”

      Dayum

    6. The only one that strikes me as a yikes is the guy who’s like ‘take her into your arms afterwards.’ That one seems too serious. The rest all seem to be taking the piss at the obviously ridiculous nature of the question.

Wild to me that a lot of people are taking these at face value when most of them are entirely tongue in cheek.

“when did you stop beating your wife” would’ve been more interesting

While they were “joking,” it is interesting this was just an open-secret. I work at a DV clinic so I know how serious and prolific domestic violence is, but I don’t know the historical data if it was worse from the early to mid/late 20th century. I imagine there’s not very good data on it given how women didn’t often come forward or even if they did, if anything would be recorded. It’s hard to imagine it being worse than now, but as we all know, hell has no bottom.

These are definitely unserious answers, except the first response reads as if he’s actually offended at the question. But others are obviously sarcastic, especially the Irish man’s answer.
