You know when you buy a car, and the dealership cleans and details it? They also usually do an oil change and fill the tank with gas. This is just like that. You know the mailbox works, because it can hold mail. And it came pre-loaded.
What’s the complaint?!

It’s not widely known but businesses will take returns and if they look new-enough, they sell them as new stock. I’ve had multiple experiences like this from Amazon which is notorious for it.
Keep this in mind especially if you’re buying computer parts. That GPU you bought on Amazon might be used. People will use something until it has an issue, buy a new one, and put the old one in the brand new box & packaging and Amazon will return as new. Now your brand new RTX 9001 Titanium Super whatever is actually a year old bitcoin farmer that was overheating and glitching.

Walmart takes returns without receipts. I wonder if someone put out the box for trash collection after installing a new mailbox, someone going by saw it and had an idea…

Decades ago, I knew someone who worked at Sony. They had two classes of returned items: a-stock was unopened and unsold, i.e. a store return. These had a small discount t.
B-stock was a customer return, with a larger discount. These were checked to make sure all the parts came back and the item was benched tested to make sure it worked and wasn’t damaged.
It’s sad that retailers now make us customers their QA testers for returned items.

Isn’t it nicer opening your brand new mailbox and finding mail in it, than not finding mail in it?

That is what is called “seed mail”. Any time you get a new mailbox at your house, you have to “seed it” in order to attract the postman.

Does the mailbox actually look new(-ish)? I’m struggling with the mindset where someone has unboxed it, installed it, had post (mail) delivered, then uninstalled it and taken it back without even noticing the post. “Hey this thing rattles already, good job we’re sending it back…!”
Or did someone install it, their spouse hated it, so then it got returned?

I swear to god, someone could start a Youtube channel just ordering shit from Walmart and filming how they fucked it up. The 150 coat hangers being delivered in individual boxes by multiple delivery drivers is the first to mind, but I hear so much weird shit about them. One time, I ordered some ramen on eBay. It was delivered by Walmart, seemingly as a Walmart[dot]com order… Strange business.

I was looking at an ‘opened box’ tent at a sporting goods store with a 10% discount. I asked the sales clerk if I could pull it out to see if it was damaged. No damage, but we found a handful of dried leaves inside. I got it half price.

Rubber band it and put it in an outgoing mail slot with note saying “found this mail”. At least the first class mail stuff. The post office will forward or return it to where it belongs.
